Every week, parents across Johns Creek, Alpharetta, and Suwanee ask us the same question: "My child is interested in cricket — where do we even start?" This guide answers everything you need to know about enrolling a child in cricket training at Sixers Sports Center, from the right age to start, to what your child should wear on day one.

What Age Can Kids Start Cricket?

At Sixers Sports Center, we welcome young cricketers starting from age 7. Our youngest program — Youth Development (ages 7–9) — is designed specifically for children with no prior cricket experience. The focus is on hand-eye coordination, basic movement patterns, and making the game fun and engaging.

Children aged 10 and above join our Junior Academy, where they begin learning proper batting stance, bowling technique, and fielding positions within a structured group training environment.

The research is clear: children who begin sport-specific skill training before age 10 develop motor pathways that are significantly harder to establish later in adolescence. Cricket's technical demands — particularly batting footwork and bowling action — benefit enormously from early exposure.

What Happens in a Typical Kids' Session?

A standard 90-minute session at Sixers looks like this:

  • Warm-up (15 min): Dynamic stretching, running drills, and ball-familiarization games
  • Technical work (40 min): Batting or bowling technique drills in the 8-lane indoor facility
  • Game-based practice (25 min): Small-sided games and match scenarios
  • Cool-down & feedback (10 min): Coach debrief, individual feedback, stretching

Our ICC-certified coaches use age-appropriate coaching methods — so a 7-year-old is never expected to perform the same as a 15-year-old. Sessions are structured around each child's development stage.

What Should My Child Bring?

For the first trial session, your child needs:

  • Comfortable sports clothes (nothing restrictive)
  • Sports shoes or trainers (not sandals)
  • A water bottle

We provide all cricket equipment for the trial — bat, pads, gloves, and helmet. As your child progresses into regular training, we'll advise on their first personal equipment purchases.

Is Cricket Safe for Young Kids?

Indoor cricket training at Sixers is extremely safe. Our younger athletes use lightweight, age-appropriate equipment, and all training is conducted on our professional indoor lanes under direct coach supervision. Helmets are mandatory for all batting practice.

Why Johns Creek Families Choose Sixers

North Atlanta has a large South Asian diaspora community with strong cricket roots — but until Sixers Sports Center opened, there was no dedicated professional indoor facility in the region. Parents from Alpharetta, Suwanee, Cumming, and Norcross regularly make the drive because of the quality of coaching and the indoor facility's ability to train year-round without weather cancellations.

Our 4.6-star Google rating reflects what parents tell us most often: their children improved faster at Sixers than at any previous program — and they actually enjoy coming to training.
